The Art Of The Nyanhongo Family
"Shona Sculpture is probably the most exciting art form to emerge from Africa this century" Newsweek Magazine
Cloud Nyanhongo began creating the intricate carvings which are now famous throughout the world more than forty years ago in his home village of Mazarura in the Eastern Highlands of Southern Rhodesia. Times have changed and Rhodesia is now the young and proud nation of Zimbabwe but Cloud is still fashioning the locally quarried stone into works of art. As a first generation artist, his pieces are very much in demand, as is his teaching. Each year, he instructs students, Zimbabweans and foreigners alike, in the intricacies of his craft. Most notable amongst his protégés are his own family, seven of whom are now working sculptors. Of these, Agnes and Gedion Nyanhongo, his two elder children are world-renowned in their own rights, having exhibited around the globe. The others however are pushing for recognition with their own distinctive styles.
The Nyanhongo Family do not work in isolation. They work with other artists from their home area of Manicaland and those they meet at Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare. This publication is designed to as an introduction to the work of the family and the fraternity of artists to which they belong.
